Utopia
Pen and Ink on paper
8.5″x11″
2007

The layout for this piece was inspired by an Ancient Egyptian papyrus painting of a pond and garden. I’ve always admired the way the Egyptians depicted everything two dimensionally yet managed to fairly accurately show the relationships between the different plant life. I also couldn’t resist adding some Asian influenced architecture that’s held my interest of late.

In this piece I placed different types of architecture from varying periods together for side-by-side comparison. By intermingling them in the fore, middle, and background it’s easier to imagine that they could actually exist in space; while at the same time it seems un-real because the objects are 2-dimensional and arranged collage-like on the page.

Lady’s Window

This is the second piece in the series, which started out as an attempt to make a central object prominent and filling the remaining page with architectural details. I started to explore new architectural types outside Gothic; and discovered the beauty of the Tudor style.

I created this piece right after “Utopia” and couldn’t resist pushing my idea of relationships further. In this hodge podge of objects floating in space I not only show the relationships between the styles in relation to each other (side by side), but by mixing them together in one unified object.

Diamonds

In this piece I’ve paired down and started to focus on the architectural periods I found the most interesting: Gothic, Tudor, Asian, and Victorian. There are still other inspirations, but in experimenting I’ve loosened up quite a bit and now I’m trying to focus in once more.

Inverted Town

In this piece I embrace the intricacies and detail. I wanted to focus in, so this piece is majority Tudor and Victorian in a way to create an ornate rich environment.

Alice in Wonderland

Portrait of a young girl who posed for a session at The Saint Louis Artist Guild, and I couldn’t resist placing her in a “Wonderland of Architecture.”

Divine

Another portrait from my sessions at The St. Louis Artist Guild. I depicted her with a halo to make her look like an angel. Something about her plain features seemed at odds with the idea which made it more appealing to me.

Here I’m trying to contrast typical 3-D rendering with an Art Deco inspired flattening. I think it looks like a mix between Pre-Raphaelite and Art Deco.

These four pieces were part of a series that I did for the Holiday Show at Framations. They were an extension of my architecture series.
